St Patrick's School is extremely conscious to ensures that all (staff and students) are kept as safe as possible.
Wide ranging processes are in place to ensure this. These include :
In the case of attendance /absence
* Ensuring that all students are accounted for by carrying out roll checks twice daily.
* Where students are not at school and their wherebouts is not explained, that contact is made with
parents/caregivers.
* Where students are required to leave school during the day, that they signed out and back in by parents.
* Notification of student absence is expected from parents in writing.
In the case of sickness or injury while at school
* Contact details of student's parents/caregivers is actively kept up to date.
* Sick students are sent to the sickbay where they either remain for a short period and if deemed well enough, return to class, of if too sick, contact is made with the parent/caregiver to go home.
* Duty teachers are in the school grounds for all breaks. All students are to report to duty teachers if unwell or injured at break times and then will be directed to the sickbay as appropriate.
* Decisions about whether an injured child is to be sent home / parents contacted or emeergency services are called are reviewed by a Senior Teacher/Principal at the time the decision is being made.
* Records of injuries and treatment however minor, if sent to the sickbay, are kept
* Any child that is sick or injured is assessed by a staff member who is trained in First Aid. .
* Parents are contacted where there is any trauma to the head, even if the child is well enough to return to class.
* Any short term medication eg antibiotics are to delivered to and kept in the office and administered by the office staff according to the directions supplied by the parent/caregiver. Office staff are to record all
medication given.
* Students with medical conditions must have an up to date careplan that is kept in the office.
* NO medication (including non prescription medication) is to be given to any student without specific parent permission for EVERY occasion. Office staff are to record all medication given.
In the case of a schoolwide emergency
* If possible, a general emergency / evacuation signal is given (continuous bell).
* All students are immediately accounted for (manual roll taken using a photographic roll) either at the
evacuation area or in the classroom (in the case of a lockdown).
* Students that cannot be accounted for are immediately reported to the team leader or principal who then
decide on an appropriate course of action to locate the student.
* Students are generally confined to class, the designated evacuation area, or another area that the Principal may determine as 'safe' as a result of the emergency.
* No student may leave the school grounds by themselves without express permission from the Principal
* Where students leave the school, they are signed out by the classroom teacher parents/caregivers, unless
directed by the principal.
* Staff are released to go home as student numbers dictate, as directed by the Principal. Staff without
dependents will normally be the last to be allowed to go home.
In the case of travelling to and from school.
* Students are actively discouraged from being on the school site before the first bell at 8:15am. Where this is unavoidable, students must gather and sit either on the R10-11 Cloakbay, R8 balcony, or on the seat outside Mrs Sutton' s office and remain there until the 8:15am bell has rung.
* Duty teachers are on duty both before and after school with the Road Patrollers. Senior staff are also on duty after school on Alexandra Street and Rewi Street.
* Students waiting to be collected by parents are to wait in the Junior Quad or to walk down the main school driveway (not through the church carpark) to Aleaxndra Street. They are NOT to be told to wait anywhere else.
* ALL students crossing Rewi Street or Alexandra Street either coming to school or leaving school must use the care/pedestrian crossings whether or not Road patrollers are on duty. Parents are encouraged to be good role models and to do the same.
* Bus students are checked onto buses at the end of the day by duty teachers. Parents are to advise the
office where students will not be on buses so as to avoid holding up buses while duty teachers look
for children who have already been collected.
* As part of the the 'Keeping Ourselves Safe' Health programmes, teachers will discuss with students about safe ways of travelling to and from school including the strategies to cope with 'stranger danger'.
It is a really good strategy for parents to revisit the 'stranger danger' processes regularly. Teachers will also revisit this subject a number of times during your child's 8 years at our school.
* Where students are walking to and from school, parents should discuss with them the route
that they should take, and where possible ensure that they are not walking alone.
